TRUSTED BY THESE WELL KNOWN BRANDS AND HUNDREDS MORE.
Dr Hastings Banda (he chose his name from a Scottish missionary he admired) was a farmer’s son, born in the landlocked southern African country of Nyasaland at the end of the 19th century. Coming to England, he qualified as a doctor in the US and later worked as a GP in Harlesden. Returning to his home country, he became involved with the independence movements that led to African decolonisation in the 1950s and 60s. He became the first Prime Minister of Malawi in 1964, then President for Life for over thirty years from 1966. This unmarried and puritanical Elder of the Church of Scotland kept his country of some seven million people under authoritarian - yet pro-Western - rule. |
